Second Grade is a special time to motivate and maintain the natural enthusiasm of each child. The development of a positive self-image and feeling of academic success is stressed. Class lessons emphasize student engagement, critical thinking skills and problem-solving, cooperative learning groups, as well as the opportunity for reflection.
RELIGION:
Second Grade is an exciting year for our students as they learn about and receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Our school community attends monthly Mass to enrich our Catholic Identity. This provides the second grade with opportunities to enhance their Christian living environment, as well as provide examples of Sacramental fulfillment.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:
Our days are infused with literature, reading, writing, and language skills. Our second grade classrooms follow a balanced literacy curriculum, and the students are exposed to various types of learning throughout the day. We continue using theSuperkids Reading Program to enhance their Literacy, Grammar and Writing Skills.
MATH:
The Ready NGLS Math program is based on the NYS Core Curriculum and includes Geometry, Measurement and Data, Number and Operations in base ten, and Algebriac Thinking. Our classrooms use manipulatives, technology and interactive activities to extend the learning concepts for our students while promoting math as an everyday tool.
SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE:
Our students learn about the physical world in which they live with varying experiments, literature connections, and topical weekly events. Social Studies and Science are connected to topics studied so that the students will develop a broad sense of our ever-changing society.
