ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:
The third graders at Sacred Heart are given many opportunities to read and write across all subject areas. Students develop reading skills using the Ready ELA books, trade books, leveled readers, and novels. They are encouraged to become familiar with books from many genres, and to develop their own reading interests. There is a focus on becoming strong writers which is taught using the writing process as well as through grammar lessons. Students also concentrate on using text evidence in their writing. Our third graders become enthusiastic readers and writers throughout the year.

MATH:
Our math curriculum has a strong focus on building multiplication and division skills. This is done with an emphasis on problem solving using a variety of strategies. Students are taught to apply their skills in other areas of math including fractions, measurement, and geometry. They are encouraged to work independently and cooperatively to become confident mathetmaticians.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
The theme of our year in social studies is how communities grow and change. Through reading, discussions, research, and project based learning, the children learn how communities throughout the world have changed over time. They compare and contrast events in history, learn about the cultures of other countries, and analyze cause and effect in relation to communities. Students use a variety of formats to share what they have learned.

SCIENCE:
Our science curriculum uses online resources and a text to teach a variety of topics. Students complete classroom experiments and research, and focus on the scientific method. Topics are included from life science, physical science, earth science, and health. There are also STEM projects that enhance the curriculum and make science even more fun!

RELIGION:
In our religion classes we explore what it means to be part of the Church. We learn about the traditions and seasons of the Church year. We also have many discussions about how the Gospel stories relate to our lives today. The students are encouraged to explore and develop their relationships with God through prayer, receiving the sacraments, and their actions. We also participate in schoolwide faith and service activities.
