Kindergarten Week of April 15th

            We have a short week of school. Wednesday is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is not available. Next week we do not have school. We will resume on April 29th. May 3rd is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is available. If you have not yet returned your child’s permission slip for the movie theater field trip and the farm trip please do so by Wednesday. Even if your child will not be attending the permission slip still needs to be submitted. Last week Mrs. Stokes came to our class and did a lesson on personal space. She taught them that they have an imaginary bubble around them, and they should not enter someone’s bubble.

            Last week the children took their first spelling test. They did great for the first test! In your child’s folder today you will find the test. Please sign and return it tomorrow. This will be the procedure each week they have a spelling test. 

In reading this week we will continue with our concept on the move. The essential question is “What can help you go from here to there?” The main story this week is When Daddy’s Truck Picks Me Up Jana Novotny Hunter and illustrated by Carol Thompson. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are journey, transportation, vehicle, wide, fierce. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The King of the Winds.

On Tuesday the children will have their chapter 7 assessment. The lessons were sent home and we have been reviewing. Please review at home with your child the numbers 11-19.

This week in science we will be talking about Earth Day. We will be discussing ways we can save the Earth. This year Earth Day is April 22nd.

On Monday we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their library book. All books need to be returned before vacation.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of April 8th

Last week, we finished the alphabet. April 17th is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school will not be available.

Now, we will begin to study about short vowels. This week we will be studying about the short a sound. The short a sound is in the words cat, cab, fan, dad and many other words. Children will be able to blend the sounds of short a words to figure out what the words are.

On Fridays going forward, the children will have spelling tests. The words for the test will always be given on Monday. We will practice these words in school during the week. The words on the test this week will consist of 6 short a words and 3 sight words. Two words will be new words and one word will be a word the children have learned already. The two sight word for this week are “said” and “want”. This week’s spelling words are: 1) cat 2) bat 3) van 4) fan 5) sad 6) dad 7) said 8) want. For the test I will say the word, say the word in the sentence and repeat the word again.  

In reading this week our concept is on the move. Kindergarten Week of April 1st

            Before you know it the end of the school year will here. I want to let you know the Kindergarten graduation is scheduled for June 17th. I do not know the time a of yet, but it will be a morning event. This will be the last day for the students. This Friday is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is available if you need.

This week we finish the alphabet with the letter Z. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter Z. Our art project for the letter will be a zebra. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter Z. Starting next week we will begin to dive into working on short vowels.

This week in math we will learn about the numbers 15, 16, and 17. We will listen to word problems and solve them. To help us solve the word problems we will draw pictures. Our chapter seven math test is scheduled for April 16th.

In reading this week our concept is animal habitats. The essential question is “Where do animals live?” The main story this week is The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson illustrated by Jane Chapman. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are habitat, complain, wild, join, and stubborn. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Aunt Nancy.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “away” and “help”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words. Please make sure you are reviewing all the words we have learned daily with your child. 

This week in religion we will be learning about the three days before Easter; Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. During these three days we celebrate how much Jesus loves us. Holy Thursday is when the Last Supper occurred. Good Friday is when Jesus was crucified to the cross. Holy Saturday is the last day of Lent.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of March 25th

It was nice seeing all of you on Thursday. We are now coming to the end of the school year. The rest is going to fly by! In your child’s folder today you will find their math assessment. Please sign and return it to school on Tuesday. Scholastic book orders are due Tuesday online using our class code PG3TB. Thursday evening Mrs. Conlan will be having a speaker come to school to talk about social media and the internet.

The letter of the week is Y. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter Y. Our art project for the letter will be a yack. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter Y.

In reading this week our concept is pet pals. The essential question is “How do you take care of different kinds of pets?” The main story this week is The Birthday Pet by Ellen Javernick illustrated by Kevin O’Malley. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are responsibility, depend, compared, train, and social. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Family Pet.

In math we will begin chapter seven. This chapter we will be focusing on how to count and write the numbers 11 to 19. This week we will focus on the numbers 11-14. We will learn that a two digit number has a ten and some ones. For example, the number 12 has one ten and two ones. Even though we have finished the chapters on addition and subtraction it is always a good idea to continue practicing at home.

This week in science we will be talking about scientists and why they are important. We will also be discussing different tools that scientists use and what their function is to a scientist. Some of the tools we will be discussing are thermometers, measuring cup, eye dropper, ruler, and many more.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “where” and “be”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words. Please make sure you are reviewing all the words we have learned daily with your child.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of March 18th

The children have been very determined to learn how to tie their shoes. On Thursday we have a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. Parent teacher conferences will also be taking place. Last week times were sent home for report card conferences. Please be on time for your appointment. Each meeting is only five minutes. Scholastic reading club orders are due online by March 26th. Please place your order online using our class code PG3TB. This is a great opportunity to order books for your children for Easter.

In reading this week our concept is baby animals. The essential question is “How are some animals alike and how are some different?” The main story this week is Zoo Borns! by Andrew Bleiman. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are exercise, appearance, wander, plenty, and behavior. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Baby Farm Animals.

We will continue with our reading concept from last week, stormy weather. The essential question is “How can you stay safe in bad weather?” The main story this week is Waiting Out the Storm by Joann Early Macken and illustrated by Susan Gaber. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are prepare, safe, enough, celebration, and notice. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Rainbow Crow.

This week in math we will continue with subtraction and finish the chapter. We will continue to practice completing a subtraction sentence and solving for the equation. Our chapter six math assessment is scheduled for March 22nd.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of March 4th

The date for report cards has been changed a few times. However, it is scheduled for Thursday March 21st. Saturday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We will be celebrating this week by reading many stories by Dr. Seuss. I will begin to test the children this week on the letters, sounds and sight words that we have learned so far. This Friday the children do not have school. The teachers will be attending a professional development day. This week the children will begin to learn how to tie their shoes. Some children learn this quickly and some take more practice. At home, please have your child practice. The only way for your child to learn is to practice.  It is best for a shoe to be on themselves when they practice.

The letter of the week is V. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter V. Our art project for the letter will be a volcano. For show and tell on Thursday, please bring in something that starts with the letter V.

This week in math we will continue to learn subtraction. This week we will be focusing on find a number to complete the subtraction sentence that is not the answer. For example, to solve the equation ?-3=2 you first would need to draw three counters and then 2. You would have 5 counters in all and that would be the missing number. If you had the equation 4-?=3 you first would need to draw four counters and cross out three. You would have one left and that would be the missing number to the equation. A math test is scheduled for March 19th.

In reading this week our concept is stormy weather. The essential question is “How can you stay safe in bad weather?” The main story this week is Waiting Out the Storm by Joann Early Macken and illustrated by Susan Gaber. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are prepare, safe, enough, celebration, and notice. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Rainbow Crow.

The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are drought, temperature, clever, predict, storm. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Frog and the Locust In reading this week our concept is the four seasons. The essential question is “How are the seasons different.” The main story this week is Mama, Is It Summer Yet? by Nikki McClure. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are weather, seasons, spot, active, migrate. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called A Tour of the Seasons.

This week in math we will begin chapter six which is subtraction. This week we will show subtraction with pictures. The vocabulary words take away and minus will be taught. We will act out word problems and use cubes to help us. Even though we have moved away from addition it is still very important to practice at home because it will help with subtraction now.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “was” and “me”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words. Please make sure you are reviewing all the words we have learned daily with your child.

This week in religion we will talk about Lent. This year Lent begins on March 6th and ends on April 18th. Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of February 10th

 

            We had such a fun 100th Day of School on Friday! We will be having a small Valentine’s Day Party on Thursday. Our class parents will be bringing in a small treat for the children. If you want your child to write out Valentine Day cards they can. Many families have been entering through the Nursery and Pre-K entrance for morning drop off. That door is not for kindergarten families. Every day please enter through the front door of the school and wait in the gym till I arrive. At 8:05 I will take the children to the classroom. If you are not there by 8:05 a representative from school will walk your child to the classroom.

The letter of the week is T. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter T. Our art project for the letter will be a tiger. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter T.

In math this week we will continue to practice addition. I don’t want to start a new chapter and then have to take a break, since we are going on vacation. When we return from vacation we will learn subtraction. In your child’s folder you will find their math assessment that they took last week. Please sign and return it to school tomorrow.

Thank you all for the generous gift for teacher’s appreciation day. It has been a pleasure teaching your children. Last week we had so much for Catholic Schools Week. This Friday is our 100th day of school. Please make sure your child comes dress in their t-shirt that they made. We will be doing a lot of fun activities all to help us better understand the number 100.

The letter of the week is S. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter S. Our art project for the letter will be a snowman. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter S.

This week in math we will review for our assessment on Thursday. One thing to review is when you have the two numbers you are adding, and you are looking to find the answer. A second thing to review is when you have one number that is being added and the answer and you are looking to find the second number being added. The third thing to review is when you have the answer and you need to find two numbers to add.

In reading this week our concept is fresh from the farm. The essential question is “What kind of things grow on a farm?” The main story this week is An Orange in January by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Julie Maren. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are raise, beneath, fresh, delicious, and special. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Farms Around the World. We will review the sound for the letter F and R.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “with” and “an”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.

This week in science we will be talking about the three phases of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. We will talk about certain things that fall into each of these categories. We will also discuss how you can have one phase of matter and with a change it can turn into another phase of matter. For example, an ice cube is a solid and over time it will turn into a liquid.
