Kindergarten Week of January 14th

This week we do not have school on Friday. Monday is Martin Luther King Day so we won’t be in school. Enjoy your four-day weekend. Scholastic book orders are due on January 16th online using our class code PG3TB. Each year for Catholic Schools Week we collect different snacks for children to have on the weekends and holidays in Potsdam. This year kindergarten has been asked to bring in instant oatmeal. Lets help children in need!
We will continue in math to practice addition. At home please practice simple addition. Now, the children are using pictures and cubes to help them. Eventually, they will need to know the addition facts in their head. This week we will focus on finding a missing number for an addition sentence. We will also create addition sentences for sums of 5, 6, and 7.
In reading this week our concept is how does your garden grow. The essential question is “What do living things need to grow?” The main story this week is My Garden by Kevin Henkes and illustrated by Brian Lovelock. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are plant, require, soak, harmful, crowd. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Growing Plants. We will review the sound for the letter H.
The letter of the week is P. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter P. Our art project for the letter will be a penguin. For show and tell on Thursday, please bring in something that starts with the letter P.
Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “in” and “can”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.
This week in social studies we will be talking about Martin Luther King Jr. Every year we celebrate him on the third Monday of January. This year we will honor him on January 14th. Dr. King’s birthday is January 15th. He said a famous speech in Washington D.C. A famous line in his speech was “I have a dream”. We will be talking about some of our dreams for our-self and world.
On Monday and Thursday we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their book so they can take out a new book.
Sacred Heart Catholic Academy is always collecting box tops for education. Please remember to cut the box top off items. When you get a bunch please send them into school. It helps our school earn money. Remember you can also earn an incentive. Thank you for your support.
