This page will provide parents and guardians with upcoming tests, important dates and homework. We will check our emails daily. Please keep in mind however the messages that you send us will not be read until after your child is dismissed. For example, if during the day a change in your schedule happens and someone else will be picking up your child, please do not inform us by email. We probably will not see the email before dismissal, so the best thing to do is call the school.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of December 10th

Sunday, we began the second week of Advent. On the Advent wreath now, two purple candles are lit. This Thursday we will have parent teacher conferences. Appointment times were sent home last week. Please be on time for your appointment so you don’t keep others waiting. This Friday will be a dress down day for $2.00. They money will be donated to the Fairy Godmother’s Foundation of Bayside. Please don’t send the money in till Friday if your child is going to dress down.
The letter of the week is M. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter M. Our art project for the letter will be a mouse. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter M.
In math this week we will be reviewing for the chapter four assessment which will be Friday. Last week, the lessons were sent home with your child. At home, you can review with your child counting sets of 10, completing a counting order not starting at one and the vocabulary words greater, more, fewer, and less.
In reading this week our concept is; time for work. The essential question is “What do people use to do their jobs?” The main story this week is Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job by Stephen Swinburne. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are utensils, uniform, equipment, expect, and remained. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Little Juan and the Cooking Pot. This week we will be working on the sound for the letter O.
Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “you” and “is”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.
This week in social studies we will be talking about how each person is different. A person’s name, the way we look, our family, our likes and dislikes all make us unique and special. This week we will be focusing on the way that each person looks that makes them unique and special.
On Monday and Thursday this week we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their library book on Wednesday, so they can take out a new book.
Sacred Heart Catholic Academy is always collecting box tops for education. Please remember to cut the box top off items. When you get a bunch please send them into school. It helps our school earn money. Remember you can also earn an incentive. Thank you for your support.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of December 3rd

Last Monday, when we returned to school, the elf on the shelf was in the classroom waiting for the children. The children named our elf Harry. He has been watching very closely. December 13th are parent teacher conferences. If you have not already, please return the slip by December 4th so that I can schedule everyone. I have noticed while checking math homework that some children have been answering questions wrong or not completing all the steps. Please read the directions to your child even though they may say they know what to do. I will be placing the Scholastic book order Tuesday evening. If you would like to order books, please do so using our class code PG3TB. This Friday we have a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is available.
The letter of the week is L. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter L. Our art project for the letter will be a lion. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter L.
This week in math we will be comparing sets by matching and comparing numbers. This week we will finish chapter four. The assessment is scheduled for December 14th. We will continue to review when we finish the chapter. At home, please review with your child how to write the numbers 1-10 if they are having trouble.
In reading this week our concept is; the places we go. The essential question is “What places do you go during the week?” The main story this week is Please Take me for a Walk by Susan Gal. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are local, routine, intelligent, neighborhood, and volunteer. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Turtle and the Flute. This week we will be working on the sound for the letter C.
Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “go” and “like”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.
In religion this week we will be learning about an important church season, Advent. This Sunday we began Advent. Advent is a season that helps us prepare for the coming of the Son of God. A symbol of Advent is a wreath with four candles; three purple and one pink. The first two weeks of Advent we light the first two purple candles. The third Sunday the pink candle is lit and the fourth Sunday the final purple candle is lit.
On Monday this week we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their library book on Wednesday so they can take out a new book.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of November 26th

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving. Thank you for all your help with the Thanksgiving breakfast. It was a great success and the children really enjoyed it. Breakfast with Santa is right around the corner. This event is organized by the kindergarten parents. If you are able to help out in any way, please see Lucas’ mom. Books can be a great Christmas gift this year. Scholastic book orders are due online by December 4th using our class code PG3TB. The orders will arrive by Christmas. Picture retake day is scheduled for Wednesday. If your child missed the first picture day or if you didn’t like how your child’s picture came out, they will have an opportunity to take or retake them.

This week in math we will begin chapter four. In chapter four the children will learn how to show and compare numbers to 10. We will be focusing on counting, writing, and different ways to make 10.
In reading this week our concept is; sounds around us. The essential question is “What are the different sounds we hear?” The main story this week is Clang! Clang! Beep! Beep! Listen to the City by Robert Burleigh illustrated by Beppe Giacobbe. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are listened, exclaimed, volume, chat and familiar. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Turtle and the Flute. This week we will be working on the sound for the letter N.

This week in science we will be learning about animals and their habitat. Animals are living organisms that eat, has a nervous system, and responds to activity. We will learn about the four different categories of animals. Some animals have a backbone, and some do not. Those who have a backbone fall into the category of vertebrate and those who do not have a backbone fall into the category of invertebrate.
On Monday and Thursday this week we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. If your child did not return their book before Thanksgiving, please make sure they do so they can take out a new book this week.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of November 19th

Thank you to everyone who donated to the food drive and donated to the Adopt a family dress down. Tuesday is our Thanksgiving breakfast. We will begin at 9:30 in the cafeteria. Please bring everything to the cafeteria for 8:30 so that the parents who volunterred to set up can start. Wednesday is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is NOT available. We will be going to the 9:00 mass on Wednesday. All are welcome to attend.
In your child’s folder is their math assessment that they took on Friday. I am sending this home today so that I can have them all back before Thanksgiving break. Please sign and return it before Wednesday. We will not be starting a new chapter in math till after Thanksgiving. We will be reviewing everything we have learned thus far. One thing that I will be reviewing a lot is greater or less than a certain number. For example, if the question is what number is 2 less than 6 the answer would be 4. Please review this at home with your child.
We will not be starting a new letter of the week. I will be assessing each child on the letter A-J for their report card. I will ask them to tell me the capital and lowercase and sound of each letter.
In reading we will continue with the concept rules to go by. The essential question is “What rules do we follow in different places?” The main story this week is How Do Dinosaurs Go to School by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are guard, rules, prank, cooperate, and responsible. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Boy Who Cried Wolf. This week we will be working on the sound for the letter I.
This week in social studies we will be talking about the First Thanksgiving. We will be discussing the trip on the Mayflower, life as a Pilgrim and Native American. We will compare and contrast the First Thanksgiving to now.
On Tuesday we will have computer. On Wednesday we will have library. Please make sure your child returns their library book. All books need to be returned before the holiday.
