This page will provide parents and guardians with upcoming tests, important dates and homework. We will check our emails daily. Please keep in mind however the messages that you send us will not be read until after your child is dismissed. For example, if during the day a change in your schedule happens and someone else will be picking up your child, please do not inform us by email. We probably will not see the email before dismissal, so the best thing to do is call the school.

Kindergarten Newsletter Week of February 10th

We had such a fun 100th Day of School on Friday! We will be having a small Valentine’s Day Party on Thursday. Our class parents will be bringing in a small treat for the children. If you want your child to write out Valentine Day cards they can. Many families have been entering through the Nursery and Pre-K entrance for morning drop off. That door is not for kindergarten families. Every day please enter through the front door of the school and wait in the gym till I arrive. At 8:05 I will take the children to the classroom. If you are not there by 8:05 a representative from school will walk your child to the classroom.

The letter of the week is T. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter T. Our art project for the letter will be a tiger. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter T.

In math this week we will continue to practice addition. I don’t want to start a new chapter and then have to take a break, since we are going on vacation. When we return from vacation we will learn subtraction. In your child’s folder you will find their math assessment that they took last week. Please sign and return it to school tomorrow.

In reading this week our concept is the four seasons. The essential question is “How are the seasons different.” The main story this week is Mama, Is It Summer Yet? by Nikki McClure. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are weather, seasons, spot, active, migrate. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called A Tour of the Seasons.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “little” and “have”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.

This week in social studies we will be talking about two presidents the United States has had in the past; George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. George Washington was the first president and Abraham Lincoln the sixteenth president. We will be comparing and contrasting the two.

On Monday we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Last week many children did not have their book. Please make sure your child returns their book. All books need to be returned before the vacation.

Sacred Heart Catholic Academy is always collecting box tops for education. Please remember to cut the box top off items. When you get a bunch please send them into school. It helps our school earn money. Remember you can also earn an incentive. Thank you for your support.

Thank you all for the generous gift for teacher’s appreciation day. It has been a pleasure teaching your children. Last week we had so much for Catholic Schools Week. This Friday is our 100th day of school. Please make sure your child comes dress in their t-shirt that they made. We will be doing a lot of fun activities all to help us better understand the number 100.

The letter of the week is S. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter S. Our art project for the letter will be a snowman. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter S.

This week in math we will review for our assessment on Thursday. One thing to review is when you have the two numbers you are adding, and you are looking to find the answer. A second thing to review is when you have one number that is being added and the answer and you are looking to find the second number being added. The third thing to review is when you have the answer and you need to find two numbers to add.

In reading this week our concept is fresh from the farm. The essential question is “What kind of things grow on a farm?” The main story this week is An Orange in January by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Julie Maren. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are raise, beneath, fresh, delicious, and special. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called Farms Around the World. We will review the sound for the letter F and R.

Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “with” and “an”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.

This week in science we will be talking about the three phases of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. We will talk about certain things that fall into each of these categories. We will also discuss how you can have one phase of matter and with a change it can turn into another phase of matter. For example, an ice cube is a solid and over time it will turn into a liquid.

On Monday and Thursday, we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their book so they can take out a new book.

Yesterday began Catholic Schools Week. This week we have a lot of fun and exciting things planned. Please remember to bring in instant oatmeal if you have not done so already. By bringing it in you will be feeding a child who is less fortunate than we are. This Friday is a half day with an 11:30 dismissal. After school is available. On Friday, I sent home information regarding a home activity for our 100th day of school. Right now, it is scheduled for February 8th.
The letter of the week is R. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter R. Our art project for the letter will be a racoon. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter R.
This week in math we will review addition, On Friday, all the lessons from the chapter were sent home. One thing to review is when you have the two numbers you are adding, and you are looking to find the answer. A second thing to review is when you have one number that is being added and the answer and you are looking to find the second number being added. The third thing to review is when you have the answer and you need to find two numbers to add.
In reading this week we will continue with the concept trees. The essential question is “How do living things change as they grow?” The main story this week is A Grand Old Tree by Mary Newell Depalma. The vocabulary words that we will be discussing are enormous, imagine, amazing, develop, and content. We will listen to an interactive read aloud called The Pine Tree. We will review the sound for the letter E.

This week in social studies we will finish up the unit alike and different. We will be talking about how people act and feel in different scenarios. We will compare with our classmates how we are alike and different by the way we look and by the things we like and don’t like to do. We will also discuss different family customs and traditions.
On Monday and Thursday, we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their book so they can take out a new book.

Kindergarten Week of January 21st

Posted on January 21, 2019

I hope you all enjoyed the four-day weekend! Each year for Catholic Schools Week we collect different snacks for children to have on the weekends and holidays in Potsdam. This year kindergarten has been asked to bring in instant oatmeal. Lets help children in need! Along with the homework that I assign each night please read with your child for 15 minutes a day. While you are reading if you come across a sight word or a simple three letter word your child should sound out the word to figure it out.
The letter of the week is Q. We will be doing many different activities to recognize the capital and lowercase letter and the sound of the letter Q. Our art project for the letter will be a queen. For show and tell on Friday, please bring in something that starts with the letter Q.
This week in math we will continue to add. When adding this week we will create addition sentences for the sums 8, 9 and 10. Last week I explained to the children that 5=3+2 is the same as 3+2=5. Please continue to practice addition at home. We will have a math test coming up the week of February 4th. When I know the exact date I will let you know.
In reading this week our concept is trees. The essential question is “How do living things change as they grow?” The main story this week is A Grand Old Tree by Mary Newell Depalma. We will review the sound for the letter E.
Sight words are words that will help your child read. When they see these words, they will need to recognize them. This week the two sight words are “are” and “did”. On Friday I will assess the children on these two words.
This week in religion this week we will learn that God made all people. God made all people good and God loves all people. God made each person different. This is what makes each person special.
On Monday we will have physical education. On Tuesday we will have music and computer. On Wednesday we will have art and library. Please make sure your child returns their book so they can take out a new book.
