Pre K 2’s Round Up for the Week of Sept. 17, 2018

We survived the first week of school! The children are transitioning nicely and we are getting used to our routines. We continue to learn about classroom routines and rules and this will take some time to get used to. This week we will begin to sign our name rather than highlight it on the attendance sheet; parents should continue to help children upon arrival with their backpacks, folders and signing in, then settling down to one of the tabletop toys left out, the Art table, Lego table or floor puzzle on the rug; thank you in advance for your cooperation. Parent-Teacher cooperation is a huge part of this program as we are both working together to provide your child with a happy, positive first learning experience. Please reinforce the idea of listening to directions and sharing hands, thank you. This week we will try lining students up for dismissal at the red door on 217 St. Parents/guardians should wait at the bottom of the awning for their child to be brought to them; please do not walk to doors as it is harder for the children to see their parents/guardians and causes crowding and confusion, thanks in advance.

What We’re Learning:

This week we will continue our first unit of study: Welcome to Pre-K. We will be talking about rules, fire drills, and learning about how we are all part of a community. We will discuss how each of us is an important member of our class and that the thoughts, feelings and needs we each have are important. We will learn to recognize and identify various feelings in ourselves and others and that all our feelings are okay and changeable. As an extension of this, we will learn how our actions towards others makes them feel by looking at how we would feel if the same actions were taken against us (ie, grabbing/sharing toys, hurtful/kind words, etc.). Our FEP this week is a puzzle piece your child will decorate and is due this Friday. We will continue to learn that the teachers and adults in our school will keep us safe and care about us and that the classroom rules we created last week are there to keep us safe and happy playing together. This week we will also begin using our Center Cards which we place on the Center in which we choose to work/play; children may choose any item in the center while they are there but the items stay in the centers, they are not spread around the classroom. When we are done with that Center, we put away our toys, take our card and move to another Center which has an available slot for our card. There are 4 children per Center and the cards help us understand what is available for our use. We will continue to focus on taking care of our toys, books and other materials in order that we can all take turns using them. Please continue to reinforce that students must clean up their toys when done with a Center; thanks! This week we will also host our first Mystery Reader on Thursday! We are so excited!

Some centers we will work in:

Dramatic Play, Art, Science, Math, Blocks, Sand & Water (Sensory), and Transportation.

Vocabulary words for the week are:

Emotions, expressions, feelings, disappointed, frustrated, embarrassed, proud, scared, angry, excited, lonely, silly.

Family Engagement Project (“FEP”): Puzzle piece, please see attached. Due Friday, 9/21/2018.
