Pre-K2 News Round-Up for the Week of February 11, 2019

Please note the following important schedule information:
1. Thursday, February 14 is Valentine’s Day! We will have a class party that afternoon. Please sign-up to bring something for our party; the sign-up sheet is by the door.
2. The week of Monday, February 18, 2019, Sacred Heart School, including Pre-K for All, will be closed for Winter Break. School will reopen on Monday, February 25, 2019.
3. Pre-K Religion classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, from 8:10 to 8:25 AM in Mrs. Wunsch’s room. Please arrive in our room between 8:00 and 8:10 to hang coats, drop off folders, and sign in before crossing the hall to Mrs. Wunsch’s room. For those who are not taking this class, the usual arrival routine applies.

What We’re Learning:
This week we are studying Week 2 of Unit 6: Light. We will focus on the following concepts:
1. Week 1: What kinds of light are around us? (Natural vs. man-made)
2. Week 2: What is darkness?
3. Week 3: How does light help us?
4. Week 4: What are shadows?

By the end of the unit children will understand that:
1. There are many types of lights in our homes and cities;
2. Light helps us see and stay warm;
3. Light helps plants grow;
4. When there is little or no light it is dark;
5. Shadows appear when an object blocks light.

The January/February Mystery Reader Sign-Up sheet is posted by the door for those who would like to read to us, thanks! The March/April Sign-up sheet will be posted later this week.

Thursday, February 14 is Valentine’s Day; we will have a small class party that afternoon. Please see the sign-up sheet by the door. Treats may be bought in for the party on the 14th. If you wish to bring in goody bags/Valentine’s cards, please bring them in by Wednesday, Feb. 13th; NO NAMES please on bags/cards, and we have 18 students in our class. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Finally, please help your child practice at home correctly signing their name using both upper and lower cases, initial letter capital, the rest lower case, thank you. Please also practice putting on and taking off coats and jackets; we are learning how to zipper and button and we need to practice at home, too!

Some centers we will work in:
Dramatic Play, Art, Science, Math, Blocks, Sand & Water (Sensory), and Transportation.

Vocabulary words for the week include:
Clouds, dark, diurnal, horizontal, light, moon, night, nocturnal, opaque, shade, stars, sunglasses, transparent, translucent, vertical.

FEP: Starry Night Picture: Students will re-create Van Gogh’s picture, Starry Night, using paint, crayons, colored pencils, glitter, whatever the child chooses to use. Please see attached instructions and sample. Paper supplied need not be used if the child wishes to use another source. Picture is due Monday, February 25.

Books we will read this week:
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.
