Pre-K2’s Round-Up for the Week of December 9, 2019


A Note to Parents:
Last week we began our unit Where We Live and we talked about the kinds of homes in which people live in Bayside. We drew pictures of our home and our family and this week we will discuss animals and their homes. On that note, please save your shoe boxes for an upcoming FEP where your child will create an animal home diorama using a shoe box! Since we are learning about where we live, please work with your child to learn their address and phone number, two important pieces of information that each child should learn.

Please note a few important dates:
1. Monday, December 16 – No After School available,
2. Thursday, December 19 – Class Holiday Party. Please bring in any goody bags today to be sent home to classmates.
3. Friday, December 20 – Full day of school, No After School available. School closed for Christmas break, reopening Monday, January 6, 2020!

What We’re Learning:
This week we will begin our fourth unit of study: Where We Live. We will focus on the following concepts:
1. Where do I live? Where do my family members live?
2. Where do people and animals live?
3. What types of homes do the people in my city (NYC) live in?
4. How do people and animals make homes?

By the end of the unit children will understand that:
1. Homes are the places where we live;
2. Animals and people have many different types of homes;
3. Some animals live with people;
4. People and animals make homes.

This week we are focusing on where animals live; we will be talking about different kinds of animals and their habitats. We will look at the woodland, ocean, desert and polar habitats in particular and discuss different kinds of bears, fish, moose, rabbits, wolves, snakes, lizards, etc. We will also discuss what animals we would find on a farm. Over the holiday break your child will create a diorama from one of these habitats (or a farm) with an animal of his/her choosing so save those shoe boxes! Dioramas will be due on Monday, January 6 when we return from break. Further information/directions will be sent home next week. We will continue to discuss how manners show others that we care about them and that kind words and actions are necessary to have a happy classroom. We will learn that each of us is a special and unique member of our class and our family and that we all have feelings which we must respect in order to live, learn and play safely together.

Finally, please help your child practice at home correctly signing their name using both upper and lower cases: initial letter capital, the rest lower case, thank you. Please also practice putting on and taking off coats and jackets; we are learning how to zipper and button and we need to practice at home, too! Please practice storing your mittens/gloves in your hat and your hat in your coat sleeve, this way all our clothes are available in one package for recess. Please check your clothing bins and switch to cold weather clothing for changes, many children still have summer clothes. Please make sure your child has warm outerwear for recess since we go outside for recess every day!
