The Month of October

Week of October 1, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope your family enjoyed the first month of school. The month of September went by very quickly and I expect that October will also.

Yesterday was the Walkathon and I was so happy to see so many of the school families there. You raised an enormous amount of money!  Sponsorships will be accepted until Friday. On Monday I will announce the winners of the class and individual prizes. Truly, we are all winners in supporting Sacred Heart Catholic Academy.

There will not be a school mass on Friday October 4th. We will have a half day ending at 12:30. Please send a snack for your child. This will include the Junior High students as well. It is a long day for them and they might need some nourishment before dismissal. Although the time goes into our lunch hour, we have extended the day for instruction. Nursery students will be dismissed at 11:20pm.

Mrs. Spordone and I have been working closely to establish a schedule for AIS. Teacher recommendation and test scores will be used as the criteria for giving assistance to students. I am thrilled to introduce iReady as part of the materials we will be using for our children in ELA and Math.

October 9th and 10th will be our picture days. On October 9th we will be having our group pictures and, on the 10th, our individual pictures. Please have your children wear the spring uniform for the group photo. Since we are  transitioning into a new uniform, it would be best if they were all wearing the polo shirt with shorts or skort. Please make sure that they wear dress shoes or sneakers that are black on that day. Students can wear free dress for the individual pictures on the 10th. The forms have already been sent out and it’s important that they are returned by the 9th.

Terra Nova testing begins on October 16th.  Please make sure your child is rested and has a good breakfast on those mornings.  On October 15th we are changing to our winter uniform. All the boys should be wearing the gray pants and girls should be wearing the jumper or the kilt.

If you have not already done so, try to register for the VIRTUS training. It will become necessary to have this done before the end of the year. We are also waiting for parents to hand in the Photo release forms.

The construction is ongoing in this area, as you know. We have had little or no notice when they will be working near the school. Please be patient with us and the crossing guards as we try to facilitate children crossing, cars and buses. We have not been able to go outside for recess due to the work they are doing this week but, I am hopeful that this will change by Friday.

The Halloween Cupcake sale and the Third Grade Saint Parade are happening at the end of the month. I’ve heard that the cupcakes and decorations are amazing and one of the great Sacred Heart traditions.! I’m also looking forward to seeing the Third Graders parading in their Saint costumes. Don’t forget the Parish Art Fest on October 19th and 20th. Please call Sister Kathleen at 718-224-5695 for more information. Monsignor will be having a Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 6th at 1:30 on the front lawn of the rectory for the Feast of St. Francis of Assissi

Looking at all these activities it feels as though October will be a great month.

Regards,

Mrs. Conlan
